Do you have a voice in your head?

An estimated 33 million Americans don't, which continues to blow my mind.

If you have an inner voice or inner monologue, it's contained in your conscious, analytical, or System 2 mind, as psychologists call it.

Also known as the voices in our heads, they take shape when we're as young as seven.

  • It was long assumed that everyone had an inner monologue.
  • Only a few years ago did humanity even come up with a medical term for not having a voice in your head.

Scientists now call it "anauralia."

According to one test subject in 2021: "I just don’t have an inner voice that speaks to me or which I can listen to talking." Another: "I silently think and silently read."

I suffer from many things. Anauralia is not one of them.

Not only do I have a burning inner voice, it's a drunken, godless anarchist with a loudspeaker on a truck bed turned up to 11. 🍺 πŸ”Š

With no inner voice, how would you know what to say when you were in love? In trouble?

An estimated one in ten Americans has no inner voice. See a major study here.

An online discussion about the phenomenon went viral in 2020. Many people were stunned to learn that others didn’t have a voice in their heads.

Anauralia is yet more evidence of how sophisticated our minds truly are.
