Jesus slays ✝️

"Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people."
—Jesus, Matthew 4:19
> hayseeds for jesus | burning biases
I could almost feel my biases burning, crackling, and buzzing.
A Christian family had walked into the Tulsa coffee shop where I worked while staying sober from alcohol.
I rolled my eyes to myself.
>> Check out these Hayseeds for Jesus. They probably go to church in a football stadium.
I quickly dubbed them "The Branson Family."
A daughter’s shirt said it all: "Jesus loves you."
It was a Sunday, naturally.
The Branson Family’s oozing cheerfulness was threatening my hard-won coffee high.
They wore Jesus-approved smiles.

The boozy Subaru 🍸
> a fifth of vodka | killed a girl
I only got two DUIs over the course of my drinking career.
For 10 years, I was protected in part by the fact that I was white and drove a Subaru with obligatory NPR bumper stickers.
I eventually totaled the car, my first DUI.
Miraculously, no one was injured.
Miraculously, I'd never been pulled over in my Subaru before. 🚔 ⚖️
- How many times in your life have you seen a white-owned Subaru pulled over by police?
- How many times in your life have you seen any Subaru pulled over by police?
I recently watched a video online of a man in jail for a drunken car crash. The man is told by authorities that he killed a girl.
He erupts into wails and collapses to the ground. He’s inconsolable. He's twisting in the grips of the jailers.
The video unnerved me for days.
That could have been me and my Subaru Forester with its award-winning safety features and virtuous NPR bumper sticker.
